Moominmamma (Tanoshii Mūmin Ikka)

Moominmamma is one of the protagonists in the Moomin anime series from 1990-92. She is the wife of Moominpappa and mother of Moomin. All three lives in the Moominhouse.

The Moomin Valley in Spring[]

Moominmamma is first seen sleeping in the Moominhouse during the winter, and is introduced by the narrator. After the time jump to spring where everyone wakes up, Moominmamma leaves the second floor guest room, putting on her apron and wishing Moomin and Little My a happy spring. Little My then asks if she has watermelon, as Little My had a dream about living in one. She answers no, but that she has a lot of other food, grabs her handbag and leaves down stairs to make a proper breakfast.

Later on, once Moomin and his friends return from mountain with the The Hobgoblin's Hat, she enters the salon from the dining room after Moominpappa falls to the ground from having the hat forcefully removed from his head because it was stuck. Moominmamma questions what is going on and who's hat it is. The group tries to figure out what to do with the hat and Moominmamma comes up with the idea of making it into a trash bin for the salon and then invites everyone for breakfast.

After eggshells were thrown in the hat, revealing it's magic powers by turning them into pink clouds and Moomin and his friends start to ride them outside, Moominmamma is seen pealing potatoes on the veranda of the Moominhouse. Moominpappa, after noticing the clouds, run to Moominmamma in disbelief and asks if Moominmamma has seen what is happening. Moominmamma very calmly responds yes and tells him that she told the children to be careful, completely unfazed by the clouds, to Moominpappa's surprise.

Once the children start to play hide and seek, Little My decides to hide in the kitchen, where Moominmamma is cleaning the dishes. niff, who is the seeker, searches through the kitchen while Moominmamma is making dinner. Sniff hears Little My's laughter and Moominmamma pretends that she did not hear anything (to not help Sniff in the game, as that is cheating). Sniff finds Little My in one of the pots on the stove.

Moomin, who his in the Hobgoblin's hat is the last to be found and reveals himself after everyone else gave up, only to have been transformed into a grotesque creature. Everyone in the salon (Moominmamma is not present) question who he is and angrily confronts him about the whereabouts of Moomin, not recognizing him, to which Moomin panics, as no one believe him. Moominmamma, hearing the commotion, enters the salon. Moomin, as the creatures, runs to Moominmamma and hugs her frantically. Moominmamma confused, asks what is going on and is told that the creature believes himself to be Moomin. Moominmamma questions it and Moomin, in panicking and in tears, tries to convince her. Moominmamma tries to calm him down and looks deep into his eyes and recognizes the creature to be her child and hugs him. As they hug, the creature transform back into Moomin, indicating that Moominmamma's motherly love and her recognizing him even in the form of the creature broke the spell. Moomin then tells everyone where he hid and due to the danger of the hat, they throw it into the river.

The Magic Hat[]

The morning after Moomin went out with Snufkin to retrieve the Hobgoblin's hat, Moominmamma notes during breakfast that Moomin looks very tired,to which Moomin replies that he just slept badly. Little My calls out his lie, to which Moomin storms off, with Little My leaving as well, tailing him, leaving Moominmamma and Moominpappa confused.

Later on, Moominmamma is seen bringing in water from the well, as Moomin and Little my hide the Hobgoblin's hat in the cellar of the Moominhouse, sneaking past Moominmamma unnoticed.

When Little My throws a sting in the hat (still in the cellar) and a huge three starts to grow from it, quickly taking over the cellar with it's size, Little My runs to tell Moominmamma about it, who is in the kitchen. At first, Moominmamma is happy to hear that a tree grows in the cellar, thinking nothing of it, but the feeling soon switches, as the tree pushes open the kitchen hatch from the cellar and now starts taking over the house. Little My tells her what happened and that the Hobgoblin's hat has been brought back, Moominmamma realizes the potential danger and quickly grabs her handbag and runs to warn Moominpappa, who is in his study. As she runs through the salon, she hears a knocking on the front door. She halts and welcomes who ever is behind the door, telling them that the door is unlocked, as she continuous to run up the stairs. Unbeknownst to her, the knocking came from the tree, which now pushes the door open, taking over the first floor. She knocks on Moominpappa's study door and hastily tells him that something is wrong and that he has to hurry before it is to late. Moominpappa senses that something is off and runs down stairs. Moominmamma is about to close the door to the study, as she sees the the tree creeping up by the study window. She hears Moominpappa shout her name for assistance, having now seen the tree, and before joining him, she warns the tree to leave Moominpappa's work alone and slams the door. Ash she heads down, she is stopped by the sight of the tree reaching the second floor. Moominpappa, struggling with the tree, asks Moominmamma to bring him a saw, but Moominmamma notes that the cellar where the saw is, is inaccessible. Moominpappa says that in that case they have to break them by hand as the tree continues to take over the whole Moominhouse. As they break the branches, Moominmamma optimistically notes that they won't have to worry about firewood for a while, as the tree starts growing flowers, which turns into fruit. Moominmamma tries one of the fruits, telling Moominpappa to try the as well as they are good.

The Hobgoblin arrives at the seen for his hat, and kills the tree, causing it to crumble and saving everyone inside the Moominhouse. The family return the hat to the Hobgoblin's hat and Moominmamma thanks him for saving them. The Hobgoblin says that it can't be a coincidence that his hat fell in Moominvalley and asks Moominmamma if she has any unusually large jewels. She searches through her handbags and takes out a ring with a large ruby, which was a gift from Moominpappa to her. The Hobgoblin looks at it and compliments it, but it is not what he is looking for. He informs them that he is looking for The King's Ruby and Moominamma replies that they will signal him if they find it. The Hobgoblin leaves and Moominmamma tells everyone to start gather the branches from the tree for firewood as the episode ends.
